First day in Nepal

First day in Nepal

Nepal is a happening place.
We got on our approximately hour long flight this morning fine, actually timed getting to the gate better than I have ever timed anything in my life and the flight went smooth…but it was not smooth. This was the bumpiest flight I have ever been on and I was somewhat nervous. But it was COMPLETELY worth it when we got the first view of the Himalayas towering and peaking over he clouds. At least 20,000 ft high, these peaks were even with the plane!
When we landed at KTM it was almost like we had gone back in time. We got off the plane straight onto the tarmac, took a little bus to the terminal then started filling out paper work! We got our visas fine and headed to baggage, where my bags were found but Dan’s bag wasn’t… it should show up tomorrow. We are praying that it does!
So after waiting about an extra hour at the airport we finally went outside and got our first glimpse of Kathmandu and Derick and Madison, who had patiently been waiting for who knows how long.
The initial impression of Kathmandu is quite simply shock and awe. You are in shock by the backwards roads and no lane roads, you drive where there is space. You are in shock of the skinny streets, countless shops and the fact that they don’t use street lights. You are in shock of the smog that blankets the city and leaves people wearing masks or rags over their face. But you are in awe of it all. How there isn’t a wreck every two seconds, the layout of the city, etc. And it’s awesome.
We drove through town to get back to Bhouda, the neighborhood Derick and Madison live in and got into their very nice apartment which is so cheap for them here. Rupees are the currency here and the exchange rate is very good. Everything is super cheap. I got a full pizza for dinner at 400 Rupees, which is approximately 4 dollars. We went to an ATM, wondered around for a bit, then met up with Bo and Songbu for lunch!
After lunch we went back to the flat and went through orientation. We learned many things about Nepal, the Tibetan Buddhists, and Buddhism itself. We learned strategy for sharing with them, went over itinerary for our trek and got to here Songbu and DunnDunn share with us, which was incredible to hear what God has put them through and how he has completely changed their lives, and altered their visions for their lives.
After orientation I got to take a shower!!!!!! I don’t think I’ve ever had a better shower.
We met up with two other guys working here as well as the two journeywomen at a place called Roadhouse for dinner. Not steak, but pizzas and pasta and anything you can think of really. It wasn’t bad at all. My pizza was very tasty.
After socializing and eating it was getting dark, which means the city was about to shut down for the night. The people go to sleep when the sun goes down and wake up when it rises. That will take some adjusting. So we went back to the flat, ate some ice cream and went to bed around 8:40!

Lucas Wiman - Getting to Nepal

So as I sit and type this at 1:44 AM Delhi, India time I can really think about what has transpired the past however many days/hours since I left the airport in Chicago. I have lost track due to the crazy time changes and whatnot. First of all, Dan almost missed the flight to Zurich because of delays on his flight to Chicago from Tulsa- that would have been interesting. Once we got settled in on the 8 hour flight it got better though. We basically skipped Sunday night, I think it was dark for about 2.5 hours over the ocean before it was morning in Europe. That was really weird. Getting into Europe was awesome though, we got to see a ton of this Alps and really picture how big God is and how majestic He is…BEFORE we even get to the Himalayas. (oh and while I’m thinking of this, international flights are great. They have tv screens on the back of each seat with TONS of new movies and music, as well as places to plug in headphones and maps to track the flight.) Anyways, once we landed in Zurich it was so weird. The airport was like deserted until we finally realized that we were not where all of the shops and food was. But it still wasn’t too crowded. This was basically a mall. Leave it to those Swiss. Gucci, Blvgari, Polo, Swatch, etc. this was an upperscale mall where I couldn’t even afford a bracelet put inside an airport! It was crazy. The next flight to Delhi, India was super uneventful. Literally slept the entire time because it was dark and I was exhausted from the all-nighter. So now, after trouble in the Delhi airport getting our baggage tickets and boarding passes, which was frightening and annoying, we are sitting in this super nice “Premium Plaza Lounge” with free food, drinks, and wifi and it is quite nice. I am content for sure. We still have about 5 hours till the next and final flight to Kathmandu, which is only going to be about an hour long, but hopefully the scenery we are going to see is unreal! That’s all I have for now, enjoy your afternoon or whatever the time is there back home!! God bless

East Asia Team Report - June 9

The East Asia team will report on their trip on Sunday, June 9th, at 6:00 pm.

East Asia Update

We are wrapping up a terrific week in East Asia!

It has been a great blessing to be a part of the Father's work here. We've had the opportunity to share the Good News with eight more people, including more shop owners and even the hostess in our hotel restaurant.

Thank you for all of your PRs for our team this week. It has been abundantly clear that the Holy Spirit has gone before us!

In a land of many idols, it is thrilling to see the spark of hope that appears when people realize there is One who holds their destiny -- unlike the golden Buddhas or the very Western stronghold of self-reliance.

As we depart, our prayer for the people is Romans 15:13: "Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."

East Asia Day 5

We continue to make many new friends in East Asia. We have had the opportunity to share with 21 more people -- including shopkeepers, basketball players, and musicians!

We have also been blessed with delicious food, great fellowship with the M families here, and by our translators, who inspire us with their boldness and devotion.

Please pray for Louis and Charlotte, two co-workers that Kevin and Danelle have met with and presented with their first copy of the Good Book. Please also pray for Sam, a young toy store owner who Woody is following up with after meeting him during the 2012 trip.

Thank you FBC family for all your prayers ... We feel them!

Day 3 Update from East Asia

Greetings from the other side of the world!

We are enjoying beautiful (summer-like) weather in our city, which has brought lots of people outdoors to the parks and squares.

So far, we have shared with 14 locals through our translators ... and we have 2 new sisters -- a coffee shop barista and a park employee!

Thank you for all the prayers. Things are going very smoothly, and we're excited to see what else the Holy Spirit has in store!

On the Ground and Going

Things are off to a great start in East Asia!

We landed in the country at 6:30 a.m. (local time) ... and then rode the high-speed train with R & Steve, arriving in our city 1:30 p.m.

After an orientation at R & N's, we went for a prayer walk in their neighborhood this afternoon.

Tomorrow -- after a good night's sleep :) -- we'll be doing some more prayer walking in the morning, then meeting with our translators in the afternoon.
